Beading and emboridery was very popular on evening dresses, so i looked at garments from this era and was inspired to design garments which have beadwork. I tried sampling with beads and sequins which were popular but they, werent as successful as i'd hoped they would have been. So i tried using buttons and adding bead where the thread goes through. This wa very successful, quick to do and i really liked the outcome. From this i them created designs.
For this page i wanted to research on modern menswear, and designers which i thought were quite inspirational. I saww some ruffles and pleats used on a Victor and Rolf design and quit liked it so i wanted to develop a design using this detail.
(This page shows small sketches, samples and designer research aldo primary reserach fro RAF COSFORD)
I then started to look at fur and the use of it in the 30's era. I visited fabrics shops, and the type of fur that i liked was quiet pricey, so i wanted to see if i could create my own fur using another material/ fabric. I was first attracted to the wool used to make felt. I layered it up to create the look of fur. It worked well but i wanted to see how far i could push it so i added other colours, fabrics and colours to it. Some of my samples turned out well, but i had to think about the hardwearing side of it and it wasn't that good because it gets matted quite quickly; so i decided not to use it.
I then started to look at architecture, paintings and eveing attire during the 20's. Looking at one painting gave me inspiration to design an embroidery design. I used the same swirls but joined the together to create a pattern.
I then sampled this idea using colours from the colour scheme, which when it was finished looked effective. so i them chose a base colour which i was considering using on my garment an enlarged the pattern. I really liked the outcome and, it convinced me to use the idea on my final design. From this i then crated a design, adding my print pattern from my textile project onto it.
Seeing as i liked the outcome of the embroidery design, i wanted to see what it would look like on the chosen fabric. The grey against grey complements each other which works well.
Between the Wars
It was my task to develop and create either a evening dress for a woman or evening attire for a man, ssticking to the chosen colour scheme. I decide to create evening attire for a man, for i haven't designed mans clothes before and thought that this would be a challenge. Also it will help me to decide wheither i prefer to design for men or women.
My starting point was looking at womens day dresses and the use of pleats on them. from this i designed a shirt which consist of pleats. After sampling a pleated yoke, it struck me that the use of pleats are effective and was a process which am considering to take forward.
